It is now a well accepted fact that Google is biased towards older sites and domains. People often wonder why after months of efforts, their site doesn't rank high enough for a particular keyword. This is due to Google's "Age Ban". Simply put, Google puts a new domain and site in 'sandbox' mode and doesn't rank it as quickly as an older domain or site. This is because of the belief that older sites are more trustworthy and therefore, offer a better surfing experience to users.
Google's entire business is based on providing its users with a great surfing and searching experience. This means that the first few pages must be devoid of all irrelevant, scammy results. Google figured out a long time ago that most scammers/spammers don't keep a site up for longer than an year (because that would mean that they would have to renew their domains). Consequently, sites that have been up for longer than an year get rewarded with higher rankings.
If you look at Google's search results for major terms, you will find that the sites that occupy the no.1 position have thousands of backlinks and are several years old. About.com, eHow.com, Wikipedia.org - sites that regularly feature in the top 10, have been around for years now and have a large "trust rank" associated with them.
So what can you do to avoid this "Age Ban" other than wait for Google to put you out of the sandbox mode? Well, one possible solution is to use an aged domain. An aged domain is one that is more than an year old and hasn't expired. You can buy an aged domain for quite cheap on the forums, or you can get one from the major expired domain sites - SnapNames.com, NameJet.com, and GoDaddy.com. Building a site on an aged domain will significantly help your SEO as compared to a new one, and avoid the "Age Ban" in the process.
